Winners of Ice Cup: Team of mixed nationalities with an Icelandic name

Ice Cup 2006 was a success with almost three foreign teams participating (one local player joined two Dutch curlers and one American to fill a team which started as three Dutch curlers and a Dane). Fourteen teams took part in a memorable event which offered both great curling and lots of fun on and off the ice. We had some very experienced curlers joining us this year.

The before mentioned team of two Dutch curlers, one American and one local turned out be unbeatable at the event. First the team won all five games played according to the Schenkel system and finished off by beating the team ranked number two in the final game for the gold. The runners up came from Slovakia, a team called Airport Bratislava BTS. That was also the case with the bronze medalists, a team from Slovakia, 1.CC Bratislava. The latter had been to the ECC twice and curlers from the Airport Bratislava BTS team went on to participate in the ECC 2006.

Winning team, calld the Icelandic name "Ókunnugir" (which means unknown): Richard Maskel, Ben Wiegers, Reinier Butot and Viđar Jónsson. Viđar is the manager of the rink and became the first Icelander to win the Ice Cup. Silver medal team, Airport Bratislava BTS: Milan Kajan, Frantisek Pitonak, Boris Kutka and Gabriela Kajanova. Bronze medal team, 1.CC Bratislava: Pavel Kocian, Pavol Pitonak, Radomir Vozar and Juraj Kapolka.
