Ice Cup: Two foreign teams have signed up

Two foreign teams have already signed up for Ice Cup. One is Margarita Switzerland under the supervision of Markus Fischer and the other team is a team of mixed nationality with Ben Wiegers as spokesman.

We will tell you more about these teams as we get closer to the closing of entry to this bonspiel.

In the past two Ice Cup bonspiels we have had players from 5 countries, including Iceland. In 2004 we had two foreign teams including curlers from Canada, Denmark, Sweden and Croatia, with the Croatians actually living in Akureyri and one of them working in the Arena. In 2005 we had curlers form 5 including Iceland. We had five foreign teams with curlers from Canada, USA, England and Scotland. So in all we have had curlers of 8 nationalities. With a team from Switzerland and another team including at least a Dutch and a Danish curler we will reach at least 10 nationalities in whole. We have yet to establish the nationality of two players in Ben Wieger’s team.

We predict that we will have 10-12 local teams from Akureyri participating and hopefully 2-3 teams from Reykjavik.
