Ice Cup: Musketeers - a team with a big name and big dreams

Skytturnar (The Musketeers) is a team of big name and big dreams. It was formed when changes were made in the Icelandic team scenery as the seniors from four teams came together and formed a team to be the first Icelanders to participate in World Senior Curling Championship. Then these four yongsters (all forty something) hooked up and became The Musketeers.

Jón Hansen is the head Musketeer (skip) and his wife, Birgitta Reinaldsdóttir, is the lead Musketeer. Together they started their curl in the early days of curling in Akureyri, i.e. 1995-1996, then curling outside since then there was no Arena. Jón has also been playing hockey for years. Birgitta and Jón became Icelandic champions with their team Víkingar in 2003. They have been working a lot with the club, both for curling and hockey.

Árni Arason is Musketeer number two. He was president of Skautafélag Akureyrar - Akureyri Ice Skating Association 1997-1999 (including curling, hockey and figure skating). He has also been working for the hockey club for years and was an hockey official for a while. He has been curling since 1996 but says he did not curl much the first years. He has twice earned the silver in the Icelandic Championship and once a bronze. Last year his team Fálkar finished second in Ice Cup. Árni isn’t just a curler and a hockey official, he has also been a soccer referee and rides his horses regularly – let’s just hope he does not combine the two sports curling and horseback riding by strolling into the Arena on his horse when Ice Cup starts.

Haraldur Ingólfsson is the third Musketeer (vice). He fell (literally) for curling on Saturday November 9th 2002 and has been sick ever since. He has been playing in the same team as Árni almost from the beginning and therefore has got the same silver and bronze medals as he does. Haraldur is known for his strong temper on the ice and sometimes does not take losses very well. He does not like when thing do not go his way.

This is a team with a big name and big dreams - and of course their goal is always to win. Ice Cup is no exception in that respect.
