Ice Cup: The Mammoths - fresh and fun but feeling a little bit older now

Few days ago it was stated here on curling.is that a new team, Norðan 12, had on average the youngest curlers in Akureyri. When they came sliding into the curling world a team called Mammútar (The Mamoths) suddenly became older and more respectable – well they are no longer the teenagers in Akureyri Curling Club!

Mammútar is a young team though, having curled since October 11th 2004. They have been practicing hard and playing a lot since then. The team has been around the centre of the group in most spiels. They have had some good sprints, being in the fight for silver or bronze medals but had to give in a little in the end. Their foremost achievement according to their own skip is that they are always fresh and funny both in practice and games.

All the Mamoths have been playing equally long – i.e. since October 11th 2004. Of course their aim is to climb some mountains and when one top is reached they go on a lookout for the next (higher) to be conquered. And of course: have fun while they are at it. Initially they stumbled on curling on the internet, found curling a curious sport and decided to try. First practice was October 11th and first tournament started October 13th.

Of course most people won’t have a problem connecting Mamoths to ice and cold – but according to themselves the name is more referral to their body building, being a bit lik Mammoths – an obvious connection, right?

Anyway, the Mammoths are:

Jón Ingi – The Slider – Sigurðsson, formaður
Björgvin – The Rock – Guðjónsson, liðsstjóri
Arnar – The Mammoth – Sigurðsson
Ólafur – The Crusher – Númason
Hörður – The Destroyer – Rúnarsson
