Ice Cup: World champion coming to Akureyri!

When results in women’s World Senior Curling Championship became clear it also became clear to those of us preparing everything for Ice Cup in May that we will have a world champion curling in Akureyri May 6th and 7th. This makes the Ice Cup committee and curlers in Akureyri in general very excited. The one we are talking about is Linda Lesperance, a member of the Scottish ladie’s team in WSCC, a team which came, saw and conquered. Linda and the other Scottish ladies played in section B, finishing there by winning 7 games and losing 1. Then they won a tie breaker against Netherlands 9-4, swept Canada away 7-4 in the semi-final and became world champions by beating Japan in the gold game, 9-5.

It is clear that curlers in Ice Cup will have to curl their best to go all the way. Last year, in our first Ice Cup, we had Charlotte Hedegaard playing in the team Queens from Helsingborg. She was in the Danish junior team winning the bronze in WJCC 1994. Maybe we will make it a rule that we always have a world curling championship medal winner each year.
